Save the Bongo – Kenya’s Hidden Forest Giant

Deep in Kenya’s misty highland forests lives the mountain bongo, one of the world’s rarest antelopes – and it’s on the brink of extinction. Fewer than 100 remain in the wild, threatened by habitat loss and hunting.

Protecting these gentle, striped antelopes means protecting our forests, our biodiversity, and our heritage.

More about:

The bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus) is a large, forest-dwelling antelope, indigenous to sub-Saharan Africa, particularly the Congolean lowland forests and Guinean forests of West Africa, as well as a few isolated montane forests in Kenya, namely the Aberdares and Mount Kenya.

Both sexes have horns, making them somewhat unusual. Another surprising feature: it is mostly nocturnal. The majority of buck species in Africa are diurnal, meaning they are primarily active during the day, not at night.
